Chapultepec and the House of Habsburg

 (text in ENG, HUN)

This weekend the weather was great again (starting to feel like spring - the sunshine is stronger and the mornings are not that cold any more), so we spent the weekend outdoors, in Park Chapultepec. It`s not so far from our home, by bus it is about half an hour. (It is better to take the bus, because parking is impossible in the weekends.) The park itself is huge, with museums (the biggest of it is the Anthropology Museum), a big lake, the zoo, a castle and of course, many many green.

This time we had 3 goals:

1) To see if squirrels in Mexico go into hibernation or not. => The answer is NO. They were jumping around in the middle of January just as always.
2) To go to the zoo and finally see all its parts. (This was the 3rd time to go there and finally we could walk around all of it.)

3) To see the Chapultepec Castle - for that I need to explain a little bit of Mexico`s history, as there is a historical exhibition in the castle.

The exhibition is because (to my big surprise) it was the home of Maximilian from the Habsburg Monarchy. I was surprised, because - as it turns out - this Maximilian was the younger brother of Franz Joseph, emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. But how did this Austrian Maximilian to Mexico? For that let me start from a little bit earlier...

The Spanish rule in Mexico lasted until the 18th century, when the Bourbon dynasty started to fall - problems between Spain and the Mexican colony started to surface, and the more and more aggressive centralization, the raise of taxes led to rebellions by the 19th century. The first rebellion for independence started by Miguel Hidalgo in 1810. It was repressed, but by 1821 Spain was forced to acknowledge the independence of Mexico.
However, by gaining independence, Mexico lost the Spanish capital. In the midst of the uncertainty and decadency of the 19th century, the country was not only divided by the monarchists and republicans, but also went to war on the north as well. (It was around 1840 when Mexico lost its northern territories (Texas etc) and today`s Mexico has evolved.) In the 1850`s a relatively peaceful period seemed to evolve by the election of Benito Juarez. However, as Juarez wanted to focus the money on nourishing the country, he announced moratorium for paying off of the overseas` debts. Of course, the foreign governments didn`t like this idea, especially France. Therefore, Napoleon III took intervention and attacked the country.
In this period of intervention was Maximilian asked for the throne by the Mexican royalists. He accepted it, disclaimed his right for the Austrian throne (in case something happened to Franz Joseph) and headed to Mexico in 1864. Maximilian unfortunately knew nothing of his country, he believed that the waving mass that greeted him in Veracruz (where his ship arrived) represented the whole country. However, a big part of the nation was against him and took the republican Juarez`s side. The number of Juarez`s people have grown as the french army (on the name of Maximilian - although he did know nothing about it) did more and more violence on the Mexican people. As the North-American war ended in 1865, the rebellion against the empire had grown. By 1867, Maximilian was deposed from Mexico City to Queretaro, and shortly after was captured by the republicans. Juarez, who got back his previous position after the rebellion, sentenced Maximilian to death. That`s how the short (3 years and 70 days) regime of the Habsburgs ended in Mexico...

And in these 3 years, Maximilian and his wife lived in the Castle of Chapultepec. The exhibition shows the era of this period - from the independence rebellions until the era of Juarez and his successor, Porfirio Diaz. The castle was not built for Maximilian, it had been here long before as the summer residence of the Aztecan emperors. Today`s style, however, is totally European - the furniture in the rooms, the stucco on the ceiling, the parquet on the floors, the mosaics on the walls... As the building was built on a small hill, the view is beautiful to the park and to the city. Paseo de la Reforma - which Maximilian ordered to build in order to access to the city center - can be well seen from here as well. The castle is beautiful both inside and outside: outdoors you can enjoy the fountains, carefully cultivated garden and the huge terraces with beautiful views. In the inside, not only the exhibition is interesting, but the halls are worth to take a look at as well. Unfortunately, the explanations are only in Spanish, but the paintings, the contemporary rooms and clothes doesn`t need much explanation.
Office of Maximilian

After going around in the castle, we strolled down to the zoo, to finally "capture it". It took for us three (!) times to finally walk around every part of it. This zoo is not only huge, but the entrance is free! (It`s the best idea one can have!)

Caracara
So, this time we went to see the polar bear section (wit the penguins and sea lions) and the birds. The polar bear section is made so you can go under and see the animals swimming around in the water as well. However, as it was hot for these animals, only the sea lion was in the water...
The bird section was amazing, with many many birds - here, they are in huge cages, and not only one species in one cage, but many mixed together. So, it was fun to search for them and identify which one is which. Of course, most of the birds are from the American continent, which was very interesting for us, as most of them we haven`t even heard of. One of these "exotic" birds was the Caracara, a smaller carnivore, which is Mexico`s national bird as well. It was very nice with its yellow-white head and also was good to see how curious it is - as many people gathered around, it came forward and walked around us. It was hard to decide, who`s behind the cage: the bird or us...

We had to recognize again that this park is so huge, that one can spend 2-3 days without getting bored.

A hétvégén a szép idő megint kicsalt minket a lakásból - ezen a hétvégén Mexikóváros "Városligetébe", a Chapultepec parkba mentünk.

Erre a válasz NEM.
3) Felmenni a Chapultepec várba.

III.

The chariot of Maximilian

Angry pelican tries to bite us

Monarch butterflies

 (text in ENG, HUN)
Monarch butterflies resting on a rock

Last weekend we went to see one of nature`s wonders, here in Mexico: the Monarch butterflies. These Monarch butterflies (which are the only butterfly species who migrate by the way) fly over 3000 (!) kms from Canada to spend the winter in Mexico. But how do these small animals travel so far? How do they navigate? Well, Wiki gave me the answers: a normal butterfly`s average lifespan is two months. However, the generation that migrates, lives up to seven months or more by giving up reproduction. They start their migration around August and arrive to Mexico around November. They spend the winter in the Mexican forests and start their way back home at the end of March. However, none of them returns home... it is a one way journey for the monarchs. The monarchs spent the winter in Mexico start their way back, lay their eggs around Texas and die there. The second generation takes the relay and continue the way to Canada. However, as this generation is already a regenerative generation, they live for two months. So, they lay eggs again on the way in order for the next generations to go on. Actually, it is only the 3rd or 4th generation that arrives back to Canada. This post-generational journey is not only amazing, but also raises the question: "How do they come to Mexico (to the same forest) from year to year without knowing the way?". Birds might have a kind of compass in their brain, but butterflies don`t even have brain! Of course, there is no firm explanation for that, but it seems that these butterflies navigate with their antennae. "Their antennae contain cryptochrome, a photoreceptor protein that is sensitive to the violet-blue part of the spectrum. In the presence of violet or blue light it can function as a chemical compass, which tells the animal if it is aligned with the earths magnetic field."(from Wikipedia) So, that`s how they navigate. Still, it is a mystery for me, how these tiny butterflies that weight only a few grams can fly so far, against wind and rain.

The horse that took us to Sierra Chingua
So, we took off early on Saturday to get to Angangueo before noon. Angangueo is about 200 kms from Mexico City, on the way to Morelia. The butterflies come to the woods of Angangueo and Valle de Bravo, and by looking at the map, they form a nice North-South line. At Angangueo, there are two sanctuaries, Sierra Chincua and El Rosario that can be easily reached. We first went to Sierra Chincua: we arrived at 9:30 (the ticket office should open at 9am but nobody was there, so we saved 35pesos each). It is about 3 kms climb in the woods to the monarchs, but there are horses that take you up (50 pesos for one way). We rode the horse and turned out, it was better that way, as the way up is not only steep, but very dusty, it would be a windpipe-killer to hike. As we were the first ones, first we didn`t find the way - we were strolling in the woods for about an hour, looking at the amazing view (the mountain is 3000meters high) and taking pictures of the many many forest flowers. But on the way back, we found more people and finally found the butterflies as well. First, it was just strange that some thick black things hang down from the pine trees, but getting close, it turned out they were all butterflies! In order to preserve the butterflies the way is closed not to get too close to the trees, but at Sierra Chincua there were some branches close enough to enjoy the monarchs. Also, as the sun comes out (it was cloudy that day), the butterflies start to fly around. It wasn`t blindingly shiny that day, but even so there were many butterflies flying in the air: it looked amazing! I don`t know if it is because they are exhausted or they are tame anyway, many butterflies flew around the people - landed on our heads, arms, legs.
A butterfly used my head to rest

Steam bubbling up from the water in Los Azufres
After standing there astonished for hours, we headed to Los Azufres, where spa is famous. This was our first spa experience in Mexico, so we were excited. Los Azufres is about 70kms from Angangueo. We stayed in a lodge in the woods, next to the spa. The spa was very interesting: there are two muddy lakes/ponds with 38 C warm water. The mud in the pond is said to be good for the skin. The water is warm due to the vulcanic activity nearby - steam comes out of the soil around here. The temperature was 15 C, so the 38 C water felt nice. There was also a steam sauna, shower (with freezingly cold water), dressing room. All the buildings are patched up bungalows, but I think this rustiness was the beauty in this spa.

The tree branches are full with butterflies
The next day, as Angangueo was on the way home, we went to see the other sanctuary, El Rosario. El Rosario was way more bigger (and more focused on tourists) than Sierra Chincua. Although El Rosario is the bigger and better advertised sanctuary, Sierra Chincua is easier to approach. (While Sierra Chincua is right along the road, we had to drive over 10kms on cobbled road...) From the parking lot, it is another 10-15 minute walk along souvenir shops to get to the woods - after buying the ticket (here it was 40 pesos), we could choose to go on foot (1.5kms) or on horse. We chose the horse again. :) El Rosario`s sanctuary is definitely bigger than Sierra Chincua: as we got to the monarchs, all the trees in front of us were packed with butterflies! I started to count the trees (just the ones we saw), but lost track at 50... and in one tree, there must have been millions of butterflies! The tree branches seemed close to break on the weight of the butterflies. (And as one butterfly must weight only a few grams, you can imagine, how much there must have been...) They were not only hanging from the branches, but were clinging to the treetrunks as well! It all looked like fish scales with the butterflies lining up next to each other. And as the sun came out, the branches looked like blossoming as the closed, grayish wings of the monarchs started to open and show their bright brown-orange wings. And the thousands of butterflies flying around in the valley really looked like orange snowflakes feather from the sky... it was beautiful!
Just a bit of the butterflies flying in sunshine

Although the weather conditions were not perfect (it was mostly cloudy), it was a jaw-dropping journey for us. I`m sure we`ll visit the monarchs every year as long as we`re in Mexico!

Monarch butterfly

A hétvégén elmentünk megnézni nemcsak Mexikó, de a világ egyik legfantasztikusabb természeti csodáját: a danaisz lepkék vándorlását. A danaisz lepkék ugyanis Kanadából 3000 km-es utat megtéve, minden évben Mexikóba vándorolnak a telet átvészelni. Ezekre a kérdésekre a Wikipedia adott választ: a lepkék átlag élettartama két hónap. Azonban a vándorló generáció elélhet akár hét hónapig is! Ők sem érnek azonban vissza a kanadai erdőkbe, a rövid életük a peterakást követően véget ér.

They come to the people - maybe they like our warm hands
Szóval, ezeket a fantasztikus lényeket mentünk megnézni.
Zoom of a branch

The mud is thought to be good for the skin (Los Azufres)
A fürdőt a hegy vulkáni tevékenysége melegiti - maga a fürdő két kisebb (iszapos) tóból áll, ami bár csak térdig ér, a talajból jövő gőzök 38 fokosra melegitik a vizet. A tóban levő iszap is jó a bőrnek, állitólag. A 15 fokos hőmérséklet mellett bizony jól esett a 38 fokos viz.

A butterfly heading to land on a branch
Vasárnap, mivel a hazaút Angangueo felé vezetett, gondoltuk, megnézzük a másik rezervátumot, El Rosariot is.
