 I have been living in Japan for 8 years without consciously noticing things, so now I don`t really know, what a "gaijin" (foreigner) would be startled of in Japan. Learning from this "mistake", I promised myself, I`d collect startling things in Mexico. These are startling for ME, another person probably wouldn`t notice...or would thing as normal. So, please note, that these letters will be quite subjective.

 First, about the most important thing that everyone needs - the place where even the king goes alone (is it only a Hungarian phrase???): the TOILET.
 The strangest thing in Mexico about the toilet is that the paper doesn`t go into the toilet, but it is thrown to the basket next to the toilet. (I wouldn`t be a cleaning lady in Mexico, not even for a fortune!) Yes, the dirty paper is in the basket - in nicer places it goes into a discreet, topped box, in not such nice places simply to a plastic basket.
About the "why", I`ve heard two explanations.
1) It is eco - the thrown paper will not harm the waters, so it`ll save the environment.
2) The water pressure is too low in Mexico, so the paper would clog the drains.

I don`t know which one is true - maybe both, maybe either. The truth is that a small amount of paper doesn`t clog the drains even in Mexico - I have to confess, I mostly throw the paper into the toilet and it has never clogged it yet. I know, "When you`re in Rome, do as Romans do", and I`d really like to, it`s just difficult to change that motion that throws the paper into the toilet and that automatized over the 30-something years... trying though. Probably, by the time we went home, I get used to it and it`ll be strange not to throw the paper into the basket...?

 Nyolc évet éltem Japánban, de sosem tudatosultak bennem a fura dolgok, egyszerűen csak hozzájuk szoktam - ezért, ma már nemigazán tudom, hogy egy "gaijin"-nak (külföldinek) mi az, ami furcsa, ha Japánba látogat. Ebből okulva, elhatároztam, hogy mexikói ittlétünk alatt leírom a furcsaságokat, amiket itt tapasztalok. Ezek NEKEM furcsák, mások talán fel sem vennék - ezért, ezek a levelek igen szubjektívek lesznek, előre elnézést érte.

 Először is arról a dologról írok, ami a legfontosabb mindenkinek, ahová a király is gyalog jár - ez a WC.

 Az első fura dolog volt, amivel találkoztam itt, rögtön miután idejöttem. A wc papírt ugyanis itt nem a vécébe dobják, hanem a vécé melletti kosárba. Igen, jól hallottátok! A jobb helyeken ez a kosár fedett, a kevésbé jobb helyeken csak egy egyszerű műanyag kosár. (Az tuti, hogy nem lennék vécés néni itt, Mexikóban...) 

 Gondolom, sokakban felvetődik, hogy "Miért?". Nos, ennek okáról eddig két magyarázatot hallottam. 

1) Ez "zöld" - így a vécépapír nem szennyezi a vizeket, amivel is megvédjük környezetünket.

2) Mexikóban alacsony a víznyomás, ezért a lehúzott vécépapír eldugaszolná a lefolyót.

 Nem tudom, melyik magyarázat az igaz - lehet, hogy mindkettőben van valami. Azt már megtapasztaltam viszont, hogy egy kis adag papír nem okoz semmilyen gondot. Igen, be kell vallanom, hogy az esetek többségében sajnos én igenis lehúzom a vécépapírt. Nem tehetek róla! A "vécébedobjukavécépapírt" a harminciksz év alatt már annyira beidegződött, hogy mire észbe kapok, már inkább nem veszem ki a papírt...talán megszokom mire hazamegyünk, úgyhogy otthon majd az lesz furcsa, hogy nem a kosárba kell dobni a papírt...?

Weekend leisure in Mexico 2 - Parque National Desierto de los Leones

Many waterfalls on the way

  This weekend we went "hiking" again. (Only in quotations, because we really just walked around in the woods for a few hours.) This time to the Parque National de los Leones - this park is just before La Marquesa, about 10 minutes from our home (Santa Fe) by car. On one side of the National Park you can find a nice carmelita monastery from the 17th century with a nice garden and huge fir trees; the rest of the park is a huge forest with many waterfalls, brooks and moss, moss, moss everywhere! The park itself is 1867 hectares. Not only huge, but also the oldest reserved biosphere in Mexico! The forest was declared reserved in 1876 and became a national park in 1917.

  Although it was cold that day (17C/62F, plus rain), there were many people in the park - bbq-ing, hiking, running, mountain biking... We first went to find a brook as our dog loves water. And indeed, despite of the cold weather he jumped into the water in the first minute! Fortunately the brook was only about ankle-deep, so even our short-legged Welsh Corgi could play around in the water. We only strolled a small part in the forest, but we saw a lot of (natural and artificial) waterfalls along the brooke, the stones and trees covered with moss...it was beautiful! Along the road we saw many other trails and there are many bbq places, benches along the road, so both the active and not that active people can find something here to have fun.

  A hétvégén ismét kutyáztunk. Bár az idő elég rossz volt (17 fok, hébe-hóba eső - nekem ne panaszkodjon mindenki, hogy otthon 4O fok van!!!), elmentünk megint hegyet mászni. A Parque National Desierto de los Leones La Marquesa előtt van, tőlünk, Santa Fétól kb. 1O percre kocsival. A park egyik részén található egy 17. századi karmelita kolostor szépen rendberakott kerttel, a park nagy része azonban erdő. Az egész nemzeti park 1867(!) hektár. A parkot már 1876-ban védetté nyilvánították (a rengeteg forrás és patak miatt), ezzel ez az ország legrégebbi védetté nyilvánított bioszférája. 1917-ben nyilvánították nemzeti parkká.

 Annak ellenére, hogy a hétvége hideg volt, rengeteg ember volt a parkban, futottak, bicikliztek, vagy csak sütögettek (sok helyen ki vannak rakva barbeque helyek, ahol lehet húst sütni, leülni, eszegetni). 

 Mi először egy patakhoz mentünk, ahová a jéghideg víz ellenére Zorro kutyánk rögtön bele is vetette magát. Szerencsére, a patak igazi hegyi patak, alig bokági érő, ezért a mi rövid lábú welsh corgink is nyugodtan tudott tapicskolni. Mivel hideg is volt és nem voltunk igazán hegymászáshoz öltözve, csak pár órát sétáltunk az erdőben a patak mentén. Mi csak egy kis részét jártuk be az erdőnek, de már az autóútról is lehetett látni, hogy rengeteg ösvény van, az út mentén pedig sok sütögető hely is fel van állítva - így aztán mind a lustább, mind az aktívabb emberek megtalálhatják a maguknak megfelelő elfoglaltságot itt.

  Az úton hazafelé be akartunk térni a templomba és a körülötte levő parkba, de a kutya olyan sáros lett a sok lubickolás és rohangálás után, hogy ez alkalommal inkább kihagytuk. Majd legközelebb, remélhetőleg egy melegebb és szárazabb időben!
