Cancun - Riviera Maya, Xel-Ha, Tulum

Happy New Year to Everyone!!!

  This time we spent the holidays in Cancun (well, near to it).
  Cancun is on the Yucatan peninsula, already south enough to have jungles and mangroves, the area is full with lagoons and the Caribbean-sea is of course beautiful. Due to the jungles and mangroves the flora and fauna is unique (well, at least to one coming from Hungary). Another unique formation is the cenotes or sinkholes. Also, this was the center of the Mayan people, so the area is full with Mayan ruins. One word in a hundred, the area is full with things to see, do, experience! (We went there this time knowing that we won't be able to see everything in only one week.)

  Our plane left Mexico City on the 24th in the morning and came back on the 31st. (This way we could avoid the high season tickets.) Our destination was Cancun and Cozumel, but as Christmas is the highest season in Cancun, the hotel prices are in the sky. (Cancun is the first destination to Americans, therefore it is nothing like the "ordinary" Mexico: everybody, I mean EVERYBODY speaks English, you can pay in dollars (we always had to ask to say the prices in pesos, as we are not Americans), the streets are safe, and clean.)
  So, we chose Riviera Maya, which is about 1.5 hours from Cancun. We spent 2 nights there and went to Cozumel (Mexico`s biggest island, 40 minutes by ferry) to spend the rest of the holiday there.

  As we arrived to the ariport, we took a bus to Playa del Carmen (about 1 hour to the south) and a taxi from there to take us to Bel Air hotel in Riviera Maya. From Cancun, Playa del Carmen is the next city around, on the way there are only hotels all along the beach. The same for Riviera Maya, it is a huge chain of hotels along the beach. The weather was a little bit cloudy and a bit humid, but warm and nice. Our hotel in Riviera Maya was great - although we had some problems with the rooms (no wi-fi in one, no hot water in the other), it was worth the money. The hotel was newly bought by Bel Air, so there are still some parts that are under construction, but the environment was amazing! Although the beach part was said to be destructed by a hurricane (many rocks on the beach), the beach in the neighborhood was amazing: dazzlingly white and soft sand, turquoise blue and transparent sea with palm trees - just like in an ad in a magazine. The hotel had several bungalows (2 apartments in one bungalow) scattered in the jungle. I was very excited, because I had read on tripadvisor that there are many animals around the hotel: and finally we weren`t disappointed! On the first night (on the 24th) we went to the restaurant for Christmas dinner (which was really good - some Mexican speciality: stuffed turkey, fish with olives and black-white cake) and on our way back we saw racoons. They were around the hotel, very shy, but looking for some food from the people.

Then, the next morning we were having breakfast in the lobby bar (a huge open place, with no walls, just a big roof) when a coati shows up! It was more friendly than the racoons, it took the food out of my hand, and wasn`t afraid of people. (Later I read that coatis are easy to tame and people sometimes keep them as pets.)

The next morning I saw a coati again, as I was sitting out on the balcony, waiting for my husband to wake up. The coati was walking on the top of the fence, presumably going to look for some food - I ran in the room to take some snack, started to throw it, and the coati smelled it despite it was 6-7 meters from me! (No wonder they have such a long nose!) We stayed on the 1st floor, therefore the coati was in trouble to come to our balcony - it climbed down the fence then climbed up a tree, jumped to another, but the balcony was too far. This time, I could see why they have such long claws (about 1.5-2 cms) - it is for climbing trees! Finally I went down and gave it some snacks.

We also saw some kind of rodent - like a capybara, but smaller, and I don`t even mention the tropical butterflies, the birds that wake you up in the mornings by their chirps and the iguanas - they are everywhere!
  So, Bel Air was full with animals, but we only realized its true value on our last day. The hotel has its own cenote on the property! Cenotes are typical in that region. Cenotes or sinkholes become from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath. (Wikipedia) They can be in caves or on the surface, but every cenote`s main feature is the crystal clear water. In the Bel Air property the cenote was like a lake - there was free rental of snorkeling set or kayaks to discover the cenote. The water was cold first, but beautifully clear with smaller and bigger fish in it. There were ducks around the mangroves as well, and as the cenote was quite big, it was a nice activity to spend the day.

Welcome to Xel-Ha!

  The second day we went to Xel-Ha. The transportation is easy, as there is only one main road around the area - you can choose taxi or the collectivo (private-managed microbuses collecting people on the road and taking off wherever they say - it`s much cheaper than the taxi but needs at least enough Spanish ability to tell the driver where to stop).

   Xel-Ha was about 30 minutes from our hotel. I would say, it is a "natural water park". The entry fee is quite high (77USD), but it was more than worth it! For this price, you get an all included ticket, so you can use all facilities, restaurants, lockers etc. There are of course optional activities, like swimming with dolphins or manatees, diving or buying the pictures taken of you. This park is a huge lagoon, surrounded by jungle, and the main activities are around the nature - you can walk/bike around the jungle to see animals (like coatis, birds, iguanas etc.), you can snorkel in the crystal clear lagoon, or descend on a river by float rings through mangroves into the lagoon, or swim into the "Mayan cave" (a cenote) or just eat in the buffet and swing in the hammocks. We went in the morning, but finally didn`t have enough time to try everything, not to mention the relaxing in the hammocks.

   First we went to see the manatee (really like a cute cow in the water) and headed to the river - the flow is very slow, but fun to float in a tunnel of mangroves. You can get out on the way to cliffdive from 10meters (which my husband did). Arriving to the lagoon, we took our snorkeling sets and swam around snorkeling - as the lagoon is huge, there are flags showing where are the fish. And there are food for the fish to take, so you can feed them and make them gather around. It was already afternoon when we came out of the water, and after a fast lunch we headed to see the cenotes and the jungle.

  The whole park is very very professional and effective and clean - in the jungle there are signs at the interesting trees or animals to see, and generally everything is very professionally arranged to be able to enjoy everything without money or anything to carry around. Also, as it is a natural park, it was good to see the efforts to be "eco" - like there are no maps handed to the people in order to save paper, but there are boards all around the place with maps, so finally it is not needed.  
  We were really hesitating to go to Xel-Ha or Xcalet (another park), but the hotel staff recommended Xel-Ha, saying it is all natural, while Xcalet is half natural, half artificial. And as Xel-Ha was also closer, we chose it, and finally we had an amazing day there! I was really smitten with the many many animals (manatees, dolphins, coatis, birds, iguanas, fish) the beautiful sea and the professionalism of the park!

After the fun, on our last day in Riviera Maya (before going to Cozumel) we went to Tulum for some culture. Tulum was a Mayan city, built in the 6th century and was known to be untaken until Cortes destroyed the city as many others in Mexico in the 16th century. We had to admit that the Mayan people knew how to live - the city is built on rocks facing the turquoise sea, with snow white sandy beach below. With this view in the background, the ruins remained from the city are astonishing! So astonishing that I didn`t watch my step and slipped on a rock with my beach sandal - having a big wound on my knee, which unfortunately shortened our visit at Tulum...

In the afternoon we went back to Playa del Carmen to take the ferry to Cozumel, our main destination. But about Cozumel, I`ll write in an other letter, as my letter is already too long...

BUÉK!!!

Vakito napsutes december vegen

  Mi az idei ünnepeket Cancunban (illetve annak közelében) töltöttük. Ez volt az első alkalom, hogy karácsonykor nem volt nagy dőzsölés, skype beszélgetés a családdal, de végül megérte, mert gyönyörű egy hetet töltöttünk.

  Cancun a Yucatan-fészigeten van, elég délre ahhoz, hogy dzsungel és mangrove boritsa a területet. Emiatt a flóra és fauna ezen a vidéken egzotikus. A térség tele van lagúnákkal és cenotékkal (talajviz, ami a mészkőtalaj beomlása miatt a felszinre kerül), a Karib-tenger pedig természetesen gyönyörű. Ráadásul a Yucatan-félsziget volt a maják központja is, ezért rengeteg itt a temlomokból, városokból megmaradt rom. Egy szó, mint száz, már elindulásunkkor tudtuk, hogy ide még vissza kell majd térni, mert egy hét nem elég mindent megnézni a környéken.

  A repülőnk (kb. 2 óra Cancunig Mexikóvárosból) 24-e hajnalban indult, és 31-én este értünk haza, igy kikerültük a csúcsforgalmi, drágább repjegyet. Először Cancun volt a fő cél, de mivel a karácsony és szilveszter a legnagyobb főszezon, a hotelárak a csillagos égbe szöktek, inkább Riviera Mayát és Cozumelt választottuk. (Cancun az amerikaiak kedvenc nyaralóhelye, ezért teljesen más, mint pl. Mexikóváros - mindenki beszélt angolul, a dollár teljesen elfogadott (annyira, hogy nekünk mindig kérni kellett, hogy pesoban mondják meg az árat, ne dollárban), az utcák biztonságosak és tiszták. Aki ezt látja csak Mexikóból, biztos, hogy hamis képet fog kapni!)

  Tehát, úticélunk Riviera Maya volt, ahol 2 éjszakát töltöttünk, azután mentünk át Cozumelre - Mexikó legnagyobb szigetére. Cancun repterétől először busszal elmentünk Playa del Carmenre, ez kb. 1,5 óra, majd onnét egy fél óra alatt elvitt a taxi Riviera Mayára, a hotelbe. Cancuntól Playa del Carmen a következő város, útközben csak szállodák sorakoznak a tengerpart mentén. Ugyanigy néz ki Riviera Maya is - egy nagy láncolata a szállodáknak a főút mentén.

A szállodánk (Bell Air), bár voltak apróbb problémák (egyik szobában wi-fi nem volt, a másikban meleg viz), igazán megérte a pénzt! Bár Bel Air nemrég vehette meg a szállodát, mert még voltak itt-ott felújitási munkák, azért fantasztikus 3 napot töltöttünk itt. A szálloda egy hatalmas területen, a dzsungelben volt, a szobák (bungallók) pedig ebben a dzsungelben voltak szétszórva. Volt természetesen medence és tengerparti része is a szállodának. Bár a strandot egy hurrikán tönkretette (csupa sziklás, köves a part), a szálloda melletti tengerpart gyönyörű volt, puha, hófehér homokkal, kristálytiszta vizzel, pálmafákkal - mintha egy magazin hirdetésében lenne.

 De engem inkább a dzsungel része érdekelt a hotelnek, olvastam ugyanis, hogy rengeteg állat jön elő az erdőből. És ez be is igazolódott! Az első estén (24-én) karácsonyi vacsorán vettünk részt a hotel éttermében, és kifelé jövet, mosómedvékbe botlottunk, amint az étterem körül őgyölögtek egy kis ételre várva.

A következő reggel pedig ahogy reggeliztünk a lobby bárban (egy nagy, nyitott bár, falak nélkül, csak egy hatalmas pálmalevél-tetővel), egy ormányos medve látogatott meg bennünket. Az ormányos medve már sokkal bátrabb volt, mint a mosómedvék, nem félt az embertől, nyugodtan elfogadta a pogácsát, amit adtam neki. Sőt, amikor háttal állt, még meg is tudtam simogatni. (Később olvastam, hogy az ormányos medvék könnyen szelidithetők, és hogy sokszor tartják őket háziállatként.)

Ormányos medvét a következő reggel is láttam, a kerités tetején sétált a bungalónk előtt, valószinűleg reggeliért ment. Gyorsan berohantam valami kajáért (otthonról hoztam sósrudat), és kidobtam neki párat, hátha észre veszi. Hát, nem hiába hivják ormányos medvének, mert 7-8 méterről is megérezte a sós rúd szagát, és visszafordult. A mi szobánk az emeleten volt, ezért a mackó először nagyon küzdött, hogy feljusson az emeletre: lemászott a keritésről, felmászott egy fára, aztán átugrott egy másikra, de sehogy sem tudott feljutni. Végül aztán lementem, és megetettem sósrúddal - bár már 3 napos volt és kemény, neki úgy tűnt, izlik. (Gondolom, nem mindennap eszik magyar sós rudat!)

 Az ormányos medvéken kivül láttunk egy rágcsálót is, ami úgy nézett ki, mint egy vizidisznó, csak kisebb volt. Rengeteg trópusi pillangó és madár is volt (élvezet volt a csicsergésükre ébredni), az iguánákat meg már nem is emlitem! (Először teljesen elájultunk tőle, de végül mindenhol, ahova csak mentünk iguánákat láttunk útközben.)

    Szóval, a szállodában fantasztikus volt a sok állat, de a hotel igazi értékére csak az utolsó nap bukkantunk rá. A szálloda területén ugyanis volt egy "cenote" is! A cenote a karsztos kőzet beomlásával felszinre törő talajvizeket jelöli. A cenote-k erre a környékre jellemző sajátos képződmények. Jellemzőjük, hogy (mivel talajviz) kristálytiszták! Sokszor barlangban vannak, de vannak felszini cenotek is, mint amilyen a Bell Air hotelben is volt. Ki lehetett ingyen kölcsönözni snorkeling felszerelést vagy kajakot, és körbecsónakázni a cenotén. A "tó" körül persze mangrove nőtt, amik között vizimadarak fészkeltek, a vizben pedig kisebb-nagyobb halak úszkáltak, amihez igazán snorkeling felszerelés sem kellett, mert a viz annyira tiszta volt, hogy a felszinrol is tokeletesen lehetett latni a halakat. Fantasztikus volt elgondolni, hogy mindez egy szállodán belül van, ráadásul nem úgy csinálták, hanem az egész természetes!

   A második napunk is a természet jegyében telt: Xel-Ha (ejsd: Sel-Ha)-ba mentünk, ami kb. fél órányira volt a szállodánktól. Xel-Ha, én úgy mondanám, hogy egy "természeti vizi élménypark".

A belépő kicsit borsos volt (77 USD), de végül megérte, mert all inclusive szolgáltatást nyújt - vagyis a csomagmegőrzőtől kezdve az étteremben való fogyasztásig minden ingyenes a parkon belül. (Persze vannak alternativ tevékenységek is, amikért fizteni kell: pl. a delfinnel vagy tengeri tehénnel való úszkálás, búvárkodás vagy a profi fotók, amit a park minden részében készitenek rólad. A park egyébként egy hatalmas lagúna, dzsungellel körülvéve, benne mindenféle tevékenységgel - snorkeling a kristálytiszta lagúnában, úszkálás a barlangi tóban, séta vagy biciklizés a dzsungelben vagy csak jókat enni az éttermekben és ejtőzni a függőágyak egyikében.

A park maga annyira nagy egyébként, hogy nekünk, bár reggel mentünk, semmi időnk nem maradt lustizni a függőágyakban, a park felét is a végén már csak "átrohantuk".

Először a tengeri tehenet mentünk megnézni (még akváriumokban is ritka, itt viszont őshonos állat) - hát, tényleg úgy néz ki, mint egy boci a vizben, bár elég szégyenlős volt, csak a hátát mutatta nekünk... A tengeri tehén után felmentünk a park végébe, ahol egy folyón le lehet ereszkedni a lagúnába. Kaptunk snorkeling felszerelést és nagy úszógumikat, amibe beleülve csorgadoztunk le a mangrove-alagútban.

A lagúnába megérkezve aztán snorkelingeztünk, úszkáltunk. Mivel hatalmas a lagúna is, nagyon profin zászlók jelzik, hogy hol van sok hal, hova érdemes menni. Sok helyen van haletető is, ahonnét lehet haleledelt venni (persze, ingyen van ez is), hogy a halakat még közelebb csábithassa az ember. Mire kievickéltünk a vizből, már délután volt, ezért egy gyors ebéd után elmentünk bejárni a dzsungelt - itt is nagyon profin, az út mentén táblák álltak az érdekesebb növényeket vagy állatokat elmagyarázandó.

  Az egész parkban nagy tisztaság volt, nem kellett törni magunkat semmiért (volt mindenhol elég bicikli, snorkeling felszerelés, hely az étteremben), tisztaság volt mindenhol, és nagyon szervezett volt az egész park. Szóval, le a kalappal előtte! Ráadásul annak ellenére, hogy rengeteg ember volt, mégsem látszott, hogy a természet megsinylené - a viz itt is kristálytiszta volt, a dzsungelben egy darab szemetet nem láttunk, és az állatok is teljesen szabadon, természetes környezetükben voltak, nem bezárva, vagy "odacsalogatva" a parkba.

   Az utolsó napunkon Riviera Mayán, Cozumelre menet előtt, még elmentünk Tulumba, "művelődni" egy kicsit. Tulum egy maja város volt, a 6. században épitették, és állitólag bevehetetlennek tartották - Cortes megérkezéséig, aki (mint minden mexikói várost) ezt is lerombolta a 16. században. Tulumot látva egyébként megfordul az ember fejében, hogy micsoda fantasztikus nép volt a maja! Élni legalábbis tudtak! A város a tengerparti sziklákra épült, a türkizkék tengerre való kilátással és hófehér homokos tengerparttal. Ilyen háttérrel, a szürke kőböl emelt épületek maradványai képeslapba beillő szépségűek. Nem csoda, hogy nem a lábam elé néztem, ami miatt a sima talpú strandpapucsomban egy kövön úgy elnyaltam, mint a béka az országúton. ...ez, illetve a seb a térdemen sajnos leröviditette tulumi városnézésünket.

  Délután visszamentünk Playa del Carmenre, ahol felszálltunk a Cozumelre vivő kompra. De Cozumelről majd a következő levelemben irok, igy is már elég hosszúra sikeredett ez a levelem...
