Diving in Cozumel

  My last letter about the Yucatan peninsula... I decided to write about the diving separately, because 1) diving is no.1 activity in Cozumel, 2) my previous letter would have been too long with it.

  Finally we went diving only for 2 days in Cozumel, because our first dive was freezing! It was freezing because the weather on that day was cloudy and windy - the resting time was not much fun on the boat... However, we went 2 days later in sunshine, and it was no problem. Finally, we would have needed the sunshine on our first dive.

  Diving at Cozumel is drift diving - which means, you enjoy the flora and fauna of the sea while floating with the current. I have never made drift diving before, and was quite nervous about it, since I`ve heard some horror stories about it. And anyway, couldn`t really imagine a "river within the ocean". But finally, it turns out, it`s not that difficult. On the contrary, you just have to float and the current takes you.
  The sea around Cozumel is an underwater national park, so every diver has to pay 2USD to enter. Of course, no touching of corals, fish etc, no anchors and no fishing is allowed here, therefore the fauna is untouched and complete. (We saw huge lobsters which would usually go to our plate at this size...)  

  Our first dive was with Dive House, where there is Japanese staff as well - we thought with a Japanese staff, the shop should be safe and decent. Turns out, the Mexican dive master was much more decent than the Japanese one... but anyway, it was a great dive, especially the first one.

  We went on the first dive to the "Montanas" (haven`t seen this spot on maps or guide books, but it`s the best!). Well, of course the tranparency was over 30 meters, the water temperature (as I mentioned) was cold for me in shorty (started to shiver within 20 minutes), but the view took my mind off it. First, the dive master pointed out a nurse shark swimming in front of us (was about 10 meters from us?). Just a minute later under an arch, there was 3 more, huge ones resting. (They could be about 3 meters?) Just a while later, a spotted eagle ray was having lunch near to us, then took off - they fly in the water like birds on the sky! It was beautiful! But we didn`t have much time to wonder, because the current was taking us forward - among beautiful arches and corals, sponges, fish... the "typical" fish at Cozumel is the queen angel fish - although angelfish are usually 10-20 cms, this kind is huge! Can be 45cms in length and weight more 1.5kilos! It was strange to see such beautifully colored tropical fish in such size! The juveniles by the way are with the "monotone" black/yellow stripes, while the adults can be grayish, blackish or blueish, depending whether it is the french, gray or blue queen angel fish. Also (my personal favorite) was the honeycomb cowfish - it`s body is like a box, its color is purple/blueish with white patterns (like honeycombs) its eyes are popping out on its forehead and has horn-like nubs above it. It might sound quite strange so, but it looks funny! Also, there was a huge (1meter) black grouper, and a big group of fish, which I missed. :( I also missed the sea turtle, which others were talking about on the boat. After getting back to the boat all the group was laughing in joy and asking the dive master what else they can show us? Big group of fish, 1meter size fish, sharks, sea turtles... everything, anyone would want.

Electric ray (from the 2nd day)

  The second dive that day (after one hour of shivering on the boat in the windy weather), was at "Paradise Reef". The spot is not deep, 12 meters (the first one was at 20ms). In the first part we were drifting over rocks and corals, where we saw lobsters (huge ones, like 60-80cms!), crabs in the caves, parrot fish eating algae and even our dive master spotted out a toadfish - a species unique at this part. In the second part, we went to a more sandy part to look for some sea horses - and we found them! It was bigger than I thought, about 10cms, clinging to a little plant at the bottom of the sea. Our dive master warned us to be very careful around these animals - apparently they can die just by stirring up the sand by our fins. We also saw a yellow stingray (a fish was swimming with it just above its back, it was funny to see), an electric ray (!), a flatfish (turbot?) and a scorpionfish as well. The scorpionfish looks like a rock and can be dangerous as its poisonous but can hardly be seen. This one was lying on the bottom and our dive master had eagle eyes to spot it out! I was looking for a minute after recognizing it wasn`t a piece of rock but a fish. Amazing camouflage!

 Unfortunately, we forgot to ask for a camera for this dive, so we only have our memories in our heads...　(the pictures here are all from our second day dive)

  However, we took pictures on the next day we went diving: it was at Hotel Sabor, there was a dive shop within the hotel, so we decided, it would be too much waste to spend so much time in Cozumel and not dive just once. So, we paid for another day and took off the next day to "Dalaila

Wall". Unfortunately, my dive didn`t start well, as my BCD was not working... as a beginner diver, I was a little bit in panic, especially when the dive master showed to blow up the BCD with my mouth. I made it last time when I took my license and it was like I remembered. Was short in breath after blowing the vest up, and went a lot of water in my mouth... finally it was ok, but still, I couldn`t adjust the air as I liked, which bothered me a lot. At Dalaila Wall, mainly the scenery was nice - the arches, corals etc. Of course, we saw nurse sharks here as well, of course, queen angel fish, triggerfish, parrot fish and other tropical fish.

For the second dive, I had my BCD changed and everything was finally OK. The second dive took place at "San Francisco Wall" and what mostly took me at this spot was the scenery: one one side there was a huge wall with all the marine life, and on the other, just eternal abyss in every direction. Even the color of the sea was different! On the wall side, it was transparent and turquoise blue, on the other side, it was blurred and deep blue... In this dive, the ones worth to mention were the sea turtles and the big black grouper (about 80 cms?). Oh, we also saw a big group of french grunts among the rocks. But for me, at this time, it was more of the enjoy of the view than the "big catches".

  Finally, despite of the troubles and the "disappointment" after the first day`s dive (on that dive, even the dive masters were amazed, so I don`t think it would be fair to compare to it) we were glad to take this second dive as well. Especially, because when we ascended to the surface, it was just time to see the sunset over the sea! For me, it was the first time to see this beautiful "feast" of nature, and it was really astonishing!

Wow! That`s a very rare marine animal!

これはユカタン半島（私はいつも“豊かん”と言い間違えますが、、、ある意味、それも合っていると思います）についての最後の手紙です。ダイビングはコスメル島の一番の魅力と言われているので、単独の手紙で思い出を残そうと思いました。

コスメルで2日間をダイビングに費やしました。1日目のダイビングは、運悪く曇っていて、風が吹いていたこともあり、とっても寒い思いをしました。そのため、2日目は行こうか行くまいか、かなり悩みましたが、せっかくコスメルに来ているので、もう一回試してみようと思い、帰る2日前にもう一回潜ってみました。その日は晴れていて、ショーティでも問題なかったので、結局2日目も潜って良かった、という印象になりました。

コスメルのダイビングスポットは島の南側に集中し、深さはさほどない（15～25m）ですが、ドリフトダイビング（潮の流れに乗って、流れていくダイビング）です。以前ドリフトダイビングについては聞いたことはありましたが、やったことがなかったので、潜る前はかなり心配しました（まず、「海の中の川」みたいなコンセプトがよく理解できませんでした…私は海のない国出身なので、、）。しかし、実際やってみて、コツを掴めば、さほど難しいものでもなく、かえってかなり楽なダイビング手法だと思いました。
コスメル周辺の海は海洋国立公園になっていて、ダイバーは入園料として2ドルを支払う必要があります。水中でサンゴや魚を触ったり、採ったりするのはもちろん禁止で、船のアンカーも使用禁止、漁業も禁止されています。そのお陰で、水中の状態は自然のままで保護されています。

1日目はダイブハウスという、日本人スタッフもいるショップへ行きました。日本人スタッフもいるからと言って、安全でちゃんとしているショップだろうと思いましたが、結局現地人のダイブマスターのほうがしっかりしているような気がしました。ダイブハウス自体は想像通り安全でプロフェッショナルだったと思います。。

1本目は「モンタニャス」という所へ行きました。（ダイブ地図でも、ガイドブックでも書いませんでしたが、一番素晴らしいスポットでした！）もちろん、透明度は30m以上の抜群のコンディションでした。水温は私にとってショーティではとても寒く感じました。（20分経過したところで震え始めましたが、景色で夢中になって、しばらくしたら寒さを忘れてました。）まず、10メートル前方の所でナースシャークを発見し、唖然すると思いきや、下を見ると岩の陰に3mぐらいのナースシャークが3匹寝ていました！しばらくしたらマダラトビエイが1匹海底でご飯を食べているのを見つけ、ちょっとしたら優雅に飛び去ってゆきました。潮に流されるまま、ゆっくりと岩のアーチや珊瑚の景色、カラフルな魚を鑑賞できました。コスメルの「典型的な」魚はクイーンエンジェルフィッシュだそうです。普通のエンジェルフィッシュは10－20センチですが、ここにいるエンジェルフィッシュは45センチ程度まで成長する種類だそうです！カラフルなトロピカルフィッシュをこんなサイズで見るのはすごい迫力です。クイーンエンジェルフィッシュの小魚は単調な黒と黄色のシマシマですが、大きいものは色が青色や、灰色や、黒色の3種類に分かれます。同じく、この辺で大きく成長してるのを見たのは、ハコフグでした。目の前に泳いでいた紫っぽいハコフグは40センチぐらいもあったと思います。1メートルぐらいのハタも、大きな群れの魚（種類不明）もいて、ボートに戻ったら、カメもいたと言われました。とにかく、一本目でサメに大物の魚に、魚の群れに、カメに、望めるものは全て見ました。ダイブマスターも、こんな「勢揃い」はなかなか見れない、と言っていました。

2本目のダイブは「パラダイスリーフ」という所に行きました。このスポットはさほど深くなく、12メートルでした。（1本目は20メートルでした。）2本目の前半は、岩や珊瑚の上をドリフトし、流れる途中でカニや巨大な伊勢海老（60－80センチ）を見ました。魚ももちろん豊富で、ブダイやクイーンエンジェルフィッシュが多かったです。ダイブマスターは岩の間に隠れていたトードフィッシュ（この辺の固有種）も見せてくれました。そして、後半は平らな砂地へ、タツノオトシゴを探しに行きました。そして、海底の植物に掴まっているのを数匹見つけることができました。思ったより大きかった（10－12センチもあった？）ですが、非常にもろい動物だそうです。まだ潜る前に、タツノオトシゴの近くは十分気を付けるよう注意されました。なぜなら、フィンで舞い上がる砂だけでも死んでしまうそうです。海底にシビレエイやアカエイ（エイの数センチ上に、バスに乗っているかのように、1匹の魚が同じスピードで泳いでいて、面白かったです）、カレイ、オコゼ（それともカサゴ？）も見ました。オコゼ？は岩みたいだったので、最初はダイブマスターがどうして岩を指差しているのか、よく分かりませんでした。じっと見つめたら、ヒレが見えてきて、魚と分かりました。すばらしいカモフラージュですね！

残念ながら、お店でカメラを頼むのを忘れ、この素晴らしいダイブは写真に残すことができませんでした。（全ての写真は2日目からです）

失敗から学んで、2回目のダイビングにはちゃんとカメラも借りました。2回目は、ホテルサボール内にあったダイブショップで予約しました。今回の1本目は「ダライラウォール」というスポットでした。私はBCDに問題があり、空気が入らなかったので、1本目はかなり苦労しました。まだ20本も潜っていない初心者なので、口でBCDを膨らませるよう海中で指示された時には冷や汗をかきました。途中、空気を自由に調整できず、かなり不便でした。ダライラウォールは主に景色（珊瑚やアーチ）が美しかったですが、ナースシャークはこっちにもいました。 魚も豊富で、クイーンエンジェルフィッシュやモンガラ、ブダイなどがたくさんいました。

2本目ではBCDを交換してもらったので、何も問題なくダイビングを楽しめました。2本目は「サンフランシスコウォール」というスポットでしたが、ここから一番印象に残ったのは景色でした。サンフランシスコウォールは大きなドロップオフで、その真横をドリフトしました。右に美しい珊瑚や魚の景色が見え、左には永遠に深淵の海…　両側の色は全く違いました。右側は透明で、ターコイズブルーの海、左側は濃いブルーでした。このスポットで一番の見どころだったのは、2匹のカメでした。1匹は岩の近くに海草を食べていて、もう1匹は優雅に泳いでいました。テレビでいつもゆっくりと見えますが、流れに逆らって泳いでもかなりのスピードでした！その他、french grunt （イサキ？）の群れやまた大きなハタも見る事が出来ました。

最終的に、BCDのトラブルにも関わらず、2回目も潜って良かったと思いました。1回目ほどの「魚の勢揃い」はありませんでしたが、景色は綺麗だったし、魚も（そんなに特別な魚がいなくても）多かったです。そして、2本目から浮上してきたら、ちょうど夕陽となりました。海に沈んでいく太陽を初めて見て、やっぱり、自然のキャンバスが一番美しい、と改めて実感しました。
